DAY 5: KIBO HUT (FULL BOARD)

Today, we will climb very gradually towards the alpine desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. These 5-6 hours walking will be taken at a slow pace until we reach Kibo Hut (4,720m). The remainder of the day will be spent relaxing in preparation for the final ascent. We will retire early tonight in comfortable lodgings.
Please note Kibo hut has no running water.
Kibo Hut altitude: 4,720m. Hike time: 5-6 hours.

DAY 6: HOROMBO HUT (FULL BOARD)

Waking up before midnight in the cover of darkness, we begin a steep climb over loose volcanic rubble. Following a careful zig-zag route with a slow, yet steady, pace will take us to the rim of the main crater, Gillman’s (5,685 m). We will rest here for a short while to enjoy the mesmerising sunrise over Mawenzi peak. Those who are still feeling well and energetic, can continue slowly to make the two-hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru peak (5,895 m) which is the highest point in Africa.
After appreciating your accomplishment, we descend to Kibo Hut for refreshments then continue our descent to reach Horombo Hut. We will stay overnight at Horombo for a well deserved rest, knowing this unforgettable experience was totally worth the hike!
