DAY 3: RIVER GAMBIA NATIONAL PARK

In the morning you board the boat for a wildlife safari on the Gambia River and we set sail to the River Gambia National Park. When we arrive there you will enjoy watching wild chimpanzees, hippos, crocodiles, monkeys and birds. An unforgettable experience.

DAY 4: KUNTAUR TO NIOKOLO KOBA

After breakfast on the banks of the river, we continue our way to the immense Niokolo Koba National Park in Senegal. After years of neglect, the park is now well protected by, among others, the Senegalese army and a nature conservation organization. Earth Safari, through its sister organization Restoring Africa’s Wildlife Foundation, is involved in a project to study and protect the endangered West African lion in the park.
Your accommodation is on the Gambia River, in the middle of the National Park.

Accommodation: Campement du Lion

DAY 5: NIOKOLO KOBA

Today is all about exploring Niokolo Koba National Park. Wildlife is not as abundant as it is in East Africa and Southern Africa, but populations of animals are expanding. During a jeep safari you will certainly encounter antelopes, monkeys, warthogs and birds and possibly lions.

Accommodation: Campement du Lion

DAY 6: NIOKOLO KOBA

In the morning you will go on a boat trip on the Gambia River. You will steer past hippos and crocodiles, all the while having the opportunity to spot antelopes, monkeys and birds on the riverbanks.
In the afternoon you again make a jeep safari, in search of those species that escaped you the day before.

Accommodation: Campement du Lion

DAY 7: NIOKOLO KOBA TO ETHIOLO

After a simple breakfast we take the car to an area on the border of Guinea Conakry. You might see wildlife along the way. In the afternoon we arrive in the village of Ethiolo.
This village is inhabited by the people of the Bassari tribe. This tribe has retained its traditional way of life. They have an animistic religion and worship their ancestors. In May young Bassari men from Senegal and Guinea Conakry meet in the village to undergo their initiation rites.
The entire area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Accommodation: Campement Chez Balingo

DAY 8: TO DINDEFELO RESERVE

We start the day with a traditional breakfast and then make a tour through the village with a guide. There is a wild group of chimpanzees in the vicinity of the village that you might be able see since they are quite accustomed to humans. In the meantime you can enjoy the village life and its hospitable people.
After lunch we take the car to the Dindefelo Reserve, where we arrive in the afternoon. This special reserve was established by the Jane Goodall Institute to protect the wild chimpanzees. The reserve houses a large waterfall, rock plateaus with beautiful views and it is a true birders paradise.

Accommodation: Camp Le Dogon de Fouta

DAY 9: DINDEFELO AND SURROUNDINGS

Today is dedicated to the Dindefelo Reserve. We visit the waterfalls of Dindefelo, where you can swim in the lake at the foot of the waterfall. We then attempt to find the chimpanzees in the area during a walk. Along the way we enjoy spectacular views over the savannahs and villages of South Senegal.

Accommodation: Camp Le Dogon de Fouta

DAY 10: DINDEFELO TO KOLDA

We have a long travel day ahead. We drive via Niokolo Koba National Park back to Kolda, a place en route to Abene on the coast. At the hotel in Kolda you can relax by the pool, or of course in your room.

Accommodation: Hotel Relais

DAY 11: KOLDA TO ABENE

After breakfast we get in our vehicle for the last part of the trip back to the beach. Along the way we stop for lunch and in the afternoon we arrive in Abene. The coming days you will enjoy some well-earned rest and have the time to refuel on your veranda or at the beach.
