DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN GAMBIA – ABENE
Arrive at the airport of Banjul (Gambia) from where we travel to the artistic village of Abene in South Senegal. Upon arrival at the cozy Guesthouse Diabatalo, located in a beautiful environment, you will be welcomed by Mieke and her Senegalese friend Adjaly. If there is a need for a bite to eat then this is of course possible. Get to know your bedroom for the coming 2 weeks, take a refreshing shower or a swim in the Atlantic Ocean (which will take you a 3 minutes’ walk)! Come and relax on your own veranda or in a hammock in the relaxing garden with beautiful flowers, plants and trees.
DAY 2: WALK, SWIM AND RELAX
Wake up to the sound of cicadas, birds and all the other natural beauty in the garden of the guesthouse. After a shared breakfast you can quietly get acquainted with the environment. You can walk through the village, in the woods or take a dip in the ocean to discover for yourself that the temperature of the sea water is very pleasant here. A wonderful day to get used to the Senegalese climate!
DAY 3: SOAK UP SOME CULTURE IN KAFOUNTINE
After breakfast we make a trip to the nearby fishing village of Kafountine where we visit the fish market and a permaculture project. At the project site we get a tour and some explanation about all kinds of medicinal trees and plants. The fish market is an impressive spectacle. Men run with big baskets on their heads through the breaking waves to get the catches of the day from the boats to the shore. The endless racks with dried and smoked fish also make a special appearance. Lunch during the visit to Kafountine is included, a drink is excluding.
DAY 4:DAY TO RELAX
This is a day to rest and relax. You can take it easy at a beach bar, on a bed at the beach or relax in the guesthouse with a book. Would you prefer to do something, in a group or alone? There are plenty of activities that Mieke from Guesthouse Diabatalo can recommend. You can think of: fishing, a workshop where you learn to make essential oils and creams, or having an African outfit made by the local tailor. Also every day you can find a soiree, reggae party or a djembé performance with dancers.
DAY 5: MLOMP CULTURAL VILLAGE (OVERNIGHT STAY)
After we all have finished our breakfast, we leave for the interior of Senegal. By car we travel to the cultural village of Mlomp and meet the owner and assistant of an ostrich project. From head to toe, they use everything from the ostrich in the village. In the shop there is the possibility to buy an ostrich souvenir. During the walk through the village we will have local style lunch a family home. This is followed by a mysterious surprise.
We arranged for the group to spend the night at the house of a family. After lunch and the surprise you can retire to your room. Dinner is spend with the local family.
DAY 6: MLOMP – ABENE – RELAX
After breakfast we slowly make our way back to the Guesthouse in Abene.
The rest of the day is according to your own interpretation.
DAY 7: NIAFRANG AND KABODIO
After breakfast we will make a trip by moped. Either you steer yourself, or you will hop on the the back. We go through the jungle to the village of Niafrang, where we meet the people from the village and have lunch in African style with a view over the river. After lunch we drive to the village Kabadio and we taste Senegalese café Touba (the traditional method of preparation is very impressive to see). Back in Abene we enjoy a drink at Bert’s bar, after which we return to the guesthouse for the evening meal.
DAY 8: BOAT TRIP TO BOUNE ISLAND
We get up early and leave by boat through the mangroves towards the island of Boune. We first stop at a lodge on the river where we have lunch. After lunch we sail to the other side where we land on the island of Boune. There you can see how jungle juice is tapped from the palm tree and get acquainted with the culture of Boune and its inhabitants. We will enjoy a traditional meal and eventually we sail back to the Guesthouse.
DAY 9: DAY TO RELAX
This day is a rest day where you can optionally visit the craft market and the Holy Tree. But you can also take a walk via the beach from Abene to Kafountine, where you can buy souvenirs at one of the many cozy shops. Of course you can also read a book or magazine and relax in a hammock or easy chair.
DAY 10: GO BATIK OR FISHING WITH BARBECUE
After breakfast you can choose to either go batik or go fishing in the mangroves. If you opt for the batik workshop, you will enjoy two half-days and work with different colour baths that need to dry. You can only go fishing if you bring your own fishing gear. The self-caught fish we then prepare ourselves on the barbecue. In the evening we enjoy the performance of Dunia percussion.
DAY 11: DAY TO RELAX
Relaxing. For the active people: you can also do something fun from the optional program. Ask for the possibilities.
DAY 12: CYCLING AND CAMPFIRE
In the morning we cycle through Abene and surroundings with a visit to a palm oil plantation where we see how palm oil is made. After our arrival back at the guesthouse we enjoy a hearty lunch.
DAY 13: DAY TO REST
You have plenty of time to buy souvenirs or to walk along the beach.
DAY 14: TIME TO SAY GOODBYE
After breakfast the sadly have to say goodbye and you will be transferred to the airport
